In Memory of
William “Buzz” Kolbe
1954 – 2024
ICF-North Texas President – 2007
William “Buzz” Butterfield Kolbe passed away peacefully to meet his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on August 1, 2024, at the age of 69, surrounded by loved ones after a courageous battle against liver and kidney failure. He was born in Passaic, New Jersey on November 9, 1954, the son of Karl William (Bill) Kolbe and Barbara Bogart Kolbe.
Buzz grew up in Montclair, New Jersey, graduated high school from The Hun School of Princeton (New Jersey), and received his BA in sociology and psychology from Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado. He earned numerous certifications in leadership training, professional etiquette and corporate coaching and was a highly regarded and sought after leadership development facilitator and life coach.
Buzz began his professional career in the technology industry as Regional Facilities Manager at NORTEL (Northern Telecom, Inc.) in Englewood, Colorado overseeing the purchasing department. He later served as Operations Manager at Rush Creek Solutions in Denver, Colorado where his responsibilities included employee relations and customer service. In 1998, he relocated to Plano, Texas where he was hired as Director of Business Services at XO Communications (NEXTLINK Southwest) in Dallas. This position required Buzz to coach multiple teams in various departments to improve processes, performance and outcomes. It also led him to realize his true passion, personal and corporate coaching and leadership development.
In October 1999, Buzz started Leading WIN, LLC, through which he was able to use his unique skills and business experience to coach clients to find life balance in their work, relationships, finances, spirituality, health and emotional wellbeing. He was a graduate of Leadership Plano Class 18 and was executive director of the program from 2007 to 2011. He also provided leadership development training and coaching to the UT Dallas MBA Program, Leadership McKinney, Leadership Allen and Leadership Wylie. For over twenty years, his training sessions in leadership development, communication skills, emotional intelligence, etiquette, high performance teams, and meeting facilitation made an immeasurable impact on individuals, nonprofit boards, and corporate teams locally and nationally.
Buzz not only used his talents to teach others how to be effective leaders, he “walked the talk.” He served on numerous nonprofit boards and advisory committees in Colorado and Texas, including the Denver Youth Program, Embrace Texas, CASA of Collin County, Arts of Collin County, CITY House, Plano Symphony Orchestra, the Plano Chamber of Commerce, Junior League of Collin County and the International Coach Federation-North Texas, serving as Chapter President in 2007.
Memories of Buzz will be cherished by his two devoted sisters, Kim Kolbe of Roseland, New Jersey and Katie Kolbe of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. He will also be forever remembered by dear friends and extended family whose lives he touched in immeasurable ways in Colorado, Maine, Martha’s Vineyard, Oklahoma, New Jersey, and North Texas. He was an active member of his faith community at Christ Church Plano, serving on the Vestry from 2003-2007.
A memorial service will be held on September 23, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel at Christ Church – 4550 Legacy Drive, Plano, Texas.
To honor Buzz’s memory, in lieu of flowers, at his request a donation is suggested to one of the following: Christ Church Plano (with memo “In Memory of Buzz”; see address above); Embrace Texas (or any of the many nonprofits Buzz impacted); or either of the two leadership programs where an annual scholarship has been established in Buzz’s memory - Leadership Plano (

Now You Know
By Cheryl Close, Director of Membership
In talking with chapter members, I am often told, “I didn’t know about that.” So, this month, I thought I would list some of the best ways to get “in the know” and to stay “in the know.”
Our Chapter Meeting. Our chapter usually meets the second Friday of the month from 11:15 AM – 1:15 PM. You can join us in person at the Las Colinas Country Club which includes lunch. If coming to Las Colinas is not convenient, you can join online via our ZOOM room. Our ZOOM attendees get to fully participate in our meetings. The coaches at Las Colinas can see and hear the coaches on ZOOM and vice versa. We field questions and comments from the country club room and the Zoom rooms. Our meetings begin with timely announcements.
Our Chapter Newsletter. Our monthly newsletter should be in your email inbox on the first Monday of each Month. If you do not see it, look in your spam or junk folder first. If you still don’t see it, reach out to
communications@icf-nt.com.
If you are new and would like to learn more about the chapter, you can also go to our website
https://www.icf-nt.com. The third item on the menu bar is “News.” Under News you can select “Current Newsletter” or “Past Newsletters.” Reading past newsletters is a great way to learn some of our past activities.
Our Website. You can see it at
https://www.icf-nt.com and it is full of information. Sit down in your favorite chair with an iced cold drink and explore. There is so much to see in the different menu areas. One area I would suggest that you check out frequently is under “Programs.“ Click on the “Event Calendar.” For most things on the calendar, you can click on them to learn more and register.
Social Media. We are active on all three of the platforms below:
Facebook. Follow the chapter on our Facebook Page
here.
LinkedIn. Follow the chapter in LinkedIn
here.
Instagram. Do you like Instagram? Follow us

Now, I hope you know and can stay “In the know!"

Member Snapshot - Mo Bryes
Our Member Snapshot is a glimpse of your fellow members, the great network of resources available to you and the value of belonging to ICF-North Texas. This month our feature is
Mo Bryes, Instar Coaching and The Dallas Warren, a wisdom community for women.
What is your story? As a first-generation American with roots in Cuba, my journey began with challenges of navigating stress and sensitivity from a young age. Therapy played a role in helping me understand myself, but it was coaching that transformed my life. Coaching gave me tools to overcome my fears and limitations, leading to lasting change and personal growth. This experience inspired me to become a coach myself, driven by a desire to help others achieve similar breakthroughs.
Why Coaching? I struggled with pressure to succeed and constantly feared failure. Despite my efforts, I couldn’t complete a semester in college without dropping out. One night, on the verge of giving up, my coach asked me to consider what it would be like if I didn’t quit. This question changed everything. I pushed through, finished my semester, and graduated. That victory sparked a series of successes that built my confidence over time. This is the power of coaching—it helps you push through barriers and realize your potential.
Why your niche? I’m a coach’s coach. I have a coach. I mentor women in business, recovery (spiritually, physically and emotionally) and relationships.
Why did you choose to be a member of ICF-North Texas? ICF stood out to me as the premier coaching organization. It was because of ICF that I decided to become a coach. I’m so proud to be a member.
Tell us about the LINC group you are in and why you chose it. The Business Development and Digital Marketing groups. I am missing out on a key venture by not taking advantage of social media platforms. Learning to utilize these services will allow me to reach a larger and more diverse population.
What travel/education/mentoring/collaboration opportunities have you enjoyed through ICF? I went to my first ICF-North Texas meeting and thought I wouldn’t fit in because I’m a recovery coach. I was welcomed with warmth and curiosity.
What is your favorite client story? I worked with a woman facing challenges in every aspect of her life. Although we were only three years apart in age, she appeared much older. Life and addiction had taken a toll on her body, her life and most of all, her spirit. I struggled to find a way to motivate her to fight for her sobriety. She felt useless and without purpose. It reminded me of the scene in Shrek where Donkey is afraid to cross the bridge. Shrek keeps him talking, walking him across the bridge backwards, so Donkey never realizes what's happening. We walked together across her metaphorical bridge.
I might not always know what my clients need or want in their hearts, but I believe they do. With a loving, compassionate, and sometimes tough coach holding a safe space, they find their truth and the permission to act on it.
Today, she is a happy, loving grandmother with a new home, a repaired marriage, and she remains sober. It’s never too late.
What is your client focus? My services include Career, Health and Wellness, Leadership Development, Personal/Life and Small Business/Entrepreneur
What are your credentials and certifications? I’m certified in Case Management, Ethics & Responsibilities, Relapse Prevention, Coaching: Family Recovery, Relationship, Life, and Master Addiction, Safe Conversations, Facilitator, Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP – Unyte-ILS), 200YTT, Polyvagal Institute Trauma Informed Yoga.
