Online Program features Sara Smith, MCC, CPCC, 2020 Chair of the ICF Professional Coaches Global Board. Sara has been involved in the ICF since 2001 where her passion for coaching led to her to become an active member in ICF North Texas and part of the leadership team for eight years. During that time, she created an ICF North Texas satellite in Tarrant County to establish an ICF identity west of the Trinity River. After two years, the satellite reunited with the main chapter to strengthen the ICF North Texas brand.
Sara was tapped to create the ICF Southeast Region and served as its co-leader for six years. That region continues to bring thought leadership to the ICF and is known for the successful creation of new chapters. While on the ICF nominating committee, Sara helped developed competency-based volunteer leadership for ICF boards.
She worked for IBM nearly 30 years and finished her tenure as an internal coach and transformational consultant. Most recently, Sara coaches in the medical community and with business and university executives.
Sara has a bachelor and master’s degree from Texas Christian University and is a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach (CPCC) and a Master Certified Coach (MCC). She has studied executive coaching at Teleos Leadership ACTP, neuroscience with Ann Betz at BeAboveLeadership and organizational and relationship coaching with CRR Global.

So much has happened with the ICF in 2020. It is our 25th anniversary year and as we prepare to celebrate the maturing of the profession and our place in it, we get word that the organization has completely restructured. In fact, the name has been changed to International Coaching Federation. What is the new structure and what does it all mean? What does this have to do with me and how will I benefit?
Those are all fair questions. Three years ago, the organization looked at the rapid evolution of the coaching profession along with persistent challenges faced by coaches all over the world: challenges like competition from people who call themselves coaches who have little or no coach specific training. Or the constant threat of regulation by people and organizations outside the coaching profession. Layer on that the knowledge that non-profit membership organizations that don’t undergo major transformation or re-invention often lose momentum and fail after 25 years.
We have far too much to accomplish to allow that to happen. In fact, the organization has worked hard to raise the visibility and acceptance of the ICF brand of coaching over the past 10 years. And if anything, the research, the alliances and the messaging have been really good, but have not penetrated the market at the speed of business. So, three years ago, the ICF Global Board and staff began to set the stage for a major transformation—new business structures to align with the broad elements of the mission and a business plan to tie everyone together with shared purpose and stellar communications. What is emerging is the International Coaching Federation: thought leadership, individual membership, coaching in organizations, credentialing and standards, coach training organizations and the ICF Foundation. Each is governed by volunteer boards with mission-specific expertise. Our collective job is to catapult our profession forward to ensure that
coaching is an integral part of a thriving society because coaching changes lives—the vision that draws us all together.
