October 14 Southeast Region Webinar
The Power of Emotions-Centered Coaching
Dan Newby, PCC

12:00 – 1:30 PM CT
Webinar Cost: ICF Global Members – $10 / Non-ICF Global Members – $20

Dan is a champion for Emotional Literacy, and works with leaders, educators, and coaches worldwide. His passion is helping emotional literacy become common sense and emotions a tool for daily use. He is the originator or Emotions-Centered Coaching. He has authored four books on emotional literacy and its application to coaching. He regularly leads his course Emotions-Centered Coaching for coaches and “people who support people” including leaders, therapists, educators, faith leaders, and parents.

While most coaches believe that emotions are important in coaching, they often lack a simple, practical way to bring them into their client conversations. This concise session will introduce you to a new interpretation of emotions, a simple method for understanding their meaning and purpose, and practical ways to integrate them into your coaching. Your comfort with emotions will increase which will allow you to easily and organically use them as a coaching tool. You will find that working with emotions directly can deepen and shorten your coaching and often produces more sustained results.

2022 North Texas Board Election

Our President-elect Tim Kincaid and the 2022 Board Nominating Committee—Steve Coxsey, Ken Jenkins and Susan Shapiro—are busy identifying a slate for the upcoming Board election. This is a fantastic way to make connections and uncover opportunities. If you have an interest in serving as a Director on the 2022 Board, or as a Manager/Committee Member who works alongside a Director, contact Tim Kincaid at pres-elect@icf-nt.com as soon as possible--no later than October 11. Coaching opportunities are expanding at a tremendous pace and serving as a director or manager is a meaningful and fulfilling way to learn more about the breadth of our coaching community across North Texas and beyond.

Celebrate Coaching 2021

Thank you to all our members and associates who attended Celebrate Coaching 2021 and to those who brought clients to enjoy what I think we can all agree was an amazing event! We truly got a glimpse of why coaching works and why it is becoming more important now and in the future.

The feedback we have received has only been positive—including what we heard from our phenomenal speakers: Richard Boyatzis and Marcia Reynolds. Thank you again for your wonderful engagement in this virtual event. We will see you next year for Celebrate Coaching 2022!

~ Sandi Knight, Chair of Celebrate Coaching 2021

Member Snapshot - Dr. Debra Atkisson, ACC

Dr. Debra Atkisson combines her skills in an interesting way as a Physician Development Coach at Texas Christian University (TCU) and UNTHSC School of Medicine, and we are pleased to feature her this month in our ongoing efforts to help our chapter members to know each other better.

It all began at TCU when they created a physician development coaching program in which 12 physicians of differing specialties were hired and trained in a nine-month class (written and developed by Jennifer Allie, PhD). Debra explained, “ICF North Texas members like Sara Smith, MCC; Cheryl Close, PCC; Dan Wilson, PCC, and others worked with our staff so that we could work with medical students with a coaching approach, and we are now working with our third class to support students and their development.” She added that they help them to navigate the journey to becoming a physician, considering academic pursuits, research, professionalism, and wellness. This work is important as medical students learn to balance many factors, including retaining and refining their ability to be empathetic scholars and remain well themselves. In addition to what they provide for students, Debra also worked alongside Dr. Allie and other coaches to develop a Faculty Wellness Program and study its impact on their school.

Coaching Background: Debra became an ACC in August of 2020, adding to an already impressive list of achievements. She earned her MD (Texas Tech), became a certified general, child and adolescent psychiatrist (Karl Menninger in Topeka, KS). The Menninger Psychiatric Training Program is now affiliated with Baylor of Houston and many of her mentors are faculty members there. When it comes to coaching, in addition to training with Dr. Allie, Debra continues to engage with the Co-Active Training Institute (CTI) to keep growing her coaching skills.

Why coaching? “I absolutely love coaching!” Debra exclaims. “It is such a positive way to assist people in achieving empowerment to find and follow their purpose and dreams.”

Recognition: While she has not won coaching awards yet, Debra has received notable recognition that relates to qualities that also make her a wonderful coach—her mentorship, service, compassion and leadership.
  • 2018 – National award from the American Psychiatric Association: Resident and Fellow Mentor
  • Distinguished Service from the Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians
  • John Bush Leadership Award from the Federation of Texas Psychiatry
  • Compassion Award from Sierra Tucson
Favorite client or team story? Debra also has a private coaching practice, AchieveCoachingRx.com, through which she helps a vast array of professionals with burnout and frustrations by developing new career, relationship, wellness, communication and other goals, in both individual and group coaching environments. Debra says she is regularly inspired by how people show up and work in coaching, where they create the steps and leaps for their path forward. She shared there was a time when she engaged in a group coaching effort for a local hospital and led the group to determine areas for improvements that they were eager for their organization to try. Debra said, “When I took their work to the leaders of the organization as part of the alliance designed with the group, the COO immediately agreed these were great ideas and they would implement them! Coaching can create a path forward which is so needed today.”

Why Are You an ICF North Texas Member? “I really enjoy being involved in the ACC and PCC LINC groups,” Debra shared. “I have learned much and been mentored by fantastic members like Sara Smith, MCC, and Cheryl Close, PCC, who helped me to see the advantages to our coaching community. ICF North Texas provides a welcoming atmosphere and opportunities to continue learning and growing.”
