Member Snapshot – Tim Williams, ACC
This month, we are delighted to introduce you to Tim G. Williams, ACC. We hope that getting to know Tim, or getting to know him a bit better through this Snapshot, will continue providing you a way to experience what wonderful members we have in ICF-North Texas.
What drew you into coaching, Tim? For the past 22 years, I’ve worked at a Fortune 500 global technology company; and as a business executive since 2011. In 2019, ironically through a coaching engagement, I began seriously reflecting on my strengths and passions, and thinking about my personal and professional future. Becoming a coach wasn’t my first thought. In that reflection though, I recalled feedback from others, that I was a good listener, had a calming presence, and was a strong people developer. I had also gained nearly two decades experience in leading people, working on several teams, and in partnering with business leaders, executives, and strategic thinkers.
Then in 2020, I took a four-month sabbatical, and following that time off, I started a new role shifting from finance and operations executive, to executive adviser. Reflecting further on the value I received from professional coaching and wanting to help others, I entered UTD’s professional and executive coaching program the following year. Soon after, I started my company to begin coaching part-time. In March 2023, I retired as VP & Strategic Adviser to the Board Chairman and CEO, ready to pursue building my coaching and consulting company, Bonafide Leaders, full-time.
I treasure being a part of people’s leadership and life journey.
Tell us about your coaching business. Bonafide Leaders is a firm dedicated to helping leaders in business, technology, and non-profit to maximize and fulfill their God-given potential and purpose, enabling their teams, companies, and organizations to achieve their mission and highest ambitions. The firm specializes in executive coaching, leadership development, and organizational consulting. Tim G. Williams is the leader behind Bonafide Leaders, striving to be a true thought partner with his clients. The firm works nearly exclusively with leaders who often directly or indirectly impact dozens, if not hundreds of other people regularly, and so I take my role as coach very seriously. To date, Bonafide Leaders has helped its coaching clients achieve breakthroughs and positive outcomes in managing time and priorities; setting strategy and executing results; getting clarity on purpose, vision and mission; managing relationships and networks; change management; managing and integrating work and life; communications and presentation skills; and developing soft skills such as poise, self-regulation and self-control.
What training have you received? I earned my ACC and a graduate certificate in professional and executive coaching, in addition to my AA-Business, BBA-Finance and MBA.
Recently, I have continued my coaching education through:
• Ethics class on the ethical uses of artificial intelligence in coaching
• Ethics class on the ethics of copyright
• Stewart Leadership Lead Now 360 certification class
I worked for 22 years at a fortune 500 global technology company, primarily focused on finance, operations, strategy, and leadership. Serving as an executive for half of those years, I was privileged to help run and operate global billion-dollar businesses, while hiring, mentoring, developing and leading hundreds of employees. Outside of the company, I’ve coached youth sports, served on for profit and nonprofit boards, and taught strategic leadership as an instructor at SMU‘s Business Leadership Center for nearly a decade now.
What has your experience in coaching shown you? I've seen that coaching truly helps clients make the changes they want in their professional and personal lives, and I’ve also seen the importance of vetting a client’s commitment level and the coach/client fit. When the double-double happens, meaning the client is highly motivated and committed, and there’s a strong coach/client fit, great things can happen, and coaching is fun and exciting! I consider myself a researcher, practitioner, and ongoing student of leadership and my coaching experience to date has confirmed my passion to work with high impact leaders.
Tell us about one of your coaching clients. I was working with someone who had never been professionally coached. Prior to coaching, my client was allowing the opinions of others and their own negative self-talk and doubts to cloud their leadership effectiveness. I remember the moment when my client recognized that they had the ability to turn the volume up on the voices that mattered the most (spouse, brother, leadership team), and to turn the volume down on those voices that were noisy but did not contribute positively to the business. It was beautiful and meaningful for me to see my client amplify their own positive self-talk, which began drowning out the interruptions and distractions. Afterwards, the client felt empowered and strengthened, and this shift in mindset gave them focus—which they desperately needed to be able to run the business well. This deepened my commitment to coaching and its significant power.
Why a member of ICF-North Texas? My coaching instructors shared the importance of having a Coaching Community and I have found their words to be very good wisdom. Having a network of other coaches to lean on and to share experiences with has been valuable support for me as a new, small business owner.
What has been most beneficial part of your membership? I joined the Digital Marketing LINC group and the Business Building LINC group. I’m still in the early phases of building my business and I have found it helpful to learn from others while also sharing what I am learning. Additionally, it’s just a good way to stay in contact with ICF-North Texas members and to hear what’s going on in each other’s world.
What else should we know about you? I love to travel. I was a college student-athlete, competing in basketball and cross country, and I still love playing and talking about sports. I’ve coached lots of youth sports teams and currently coach my son’s 6th grade basketball team.
If you would like to reach out to Tim, you can find him at twill@bonafidelead.com.
I love the freedom and flexibility that having a coaching business affords, including being able to dress up and dress down, and to spend more quality time with family, like this trip to the Caribbean with my wife and two kids!
