About this event

Discovering the Magic of Metaphors

by Sara Smith, MCC, CPCC, and Vice Chair, ICF Global Board

Join us following the luncheon program as Sara Smith teaches us the skills to listen for our clients’ use of metaphors and then harvest them to use in our coaching. (Notice the use of the word “harvesting”? Yep, it’s a metaphor.)

Workshop Description

Metaphors are a great tool and can be one cornerstone to creating awareness—one of the most complex coaching competencies. They can also be daunting. The question is, how can I use metaphors that sound natural. I don’t want my coaching to sound clunky and made up. We will talk about the magic of metaphors and how they open up the creative parts of a client’s brain. We will talk about what makes a good metaphor and how to hear them in what our clients say. You will be given the chance to observe coaching aimed at highlighting the use of metaphor and then debrief what you heard.

Workshop Outcomes:
  • The importance of self-management
  • Brain science background: the process of considering ideas
  • Understanding metaphors and how they work
  • Listening for and using metaphors
