The History of the North Texas Prism Award


The ICF International Prism Award has become an epitome of coaching excellence for companies using professional coaching to achieve impressive return on investment/expectations. Each year, ICF honors organizations who have demonstrated that professional coaching used as a leadership strategy can pay off greatly.
ICF Chapters award local organizations with Prism Awards each year. In 2005, the global office of the ICF adopted the concept of the Prism Award developed by the Greater Toronto ICF Chapter, and has been recognizing organizations that have enhanced excellence and business achievement through their commitment to coaching ever since. 

Patti Burgess, the architect of the award has said that the concept for the award came to her when she thought of coaching as a tool to help clients create “full spectrum living” for themselves. The idea of a spectrum led to “prism” because of the ability of the quartz crystal to refract light into the full spectrum of colors. It represents the clarity of thinking, the harmony, and the alignment of many human energies working together to achieve business/ organizational goals.
North Texas Chapter Award Winners

  • 2005 Prism Award honored both IBM and ORACLE Corporation. The chapter was elated that IBM went on to win the 2005 Global Prism Award. Beverly Wright was the nominating coach for IBM  Jeanine Sandstrom was the nominating coach for ORACLE Corporation.
  • 2006 Prism Award honored The University of Texas Dallas School of Management for its commitment to coaching in both the Executive and Professional Coaching Program and the Executive MBA Program.  This local winner also claimed International recognition as one of the 2006 Global Prism Award recipients at the Global ICF Conference. Judy Feld was the nominating coach.
  • 2007 Prism Award honored EDS.  IBM was honored for a second time because of their significant growth in their Internal Coaching programs. Jill Donaldson was the nominating coach for EDS. Beverly Wright was the nominating coach for IBM
  • 2007 Prism nominee and and ICF Global Prism Award winner was Deloitte and Touche.
  • 2009 Prism Award honored Raytheon. Julie Overholt was the nominating coach.
  • 2010 Prism Award was not presented.
  • 2011 Prism Award honored McKesson Corporation and the Lewisville Independent School District. Valerie Sokolosky was the nominating coach for McKesson Corporation.  Frances Shuster was the nominating coach for the Lewisville Independent School District.
  • 2012 Prism Award also had two honorees.  The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center for their multi-year coaching program serving administrative and medical audiences through coaching. Xerox Business Systems earned their Prism Award for using coaching as a vehicle to promote excellence. Judy Feld was the nominating coach for The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Mina Brown was the nominating coach for Xerox Business Systems.
  • 2013 Prism Award honored BNSF Railroad. Alma Weaver Jones was the nominating coach for BNSF Railroad.
  • 2014 Prism Award honored CHRISTUS Health. At CHRISTUS Health, coaching is driven from the top down, with linkages to all leadership development programs and is creatively used for new executive assimilation. Neena Newberry was the nominating coach for CHRISTUS Health.
  • 2015 Prism Award honored both Center for Evangelism & Church Growth and Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.  Susan Potter was the nominating coach for Center for Evangelism & Church Growth and Susan Shapiro was the nominating coach for Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.
  • 2016 Prism Award:  The winner of the 2016 ICF-NT Prism Award is UNT Health Science Center.

    coaching initiative is led by Steven Sosland, Executive Vice President and Chief
    People & Performance Officer (and ICF-certified as an Associated Certified Coach).
    In 2014, the UNT Health Science Center began a journey to establish a culture
    based on the common values of its team members. Initially, a process was created
    to identify common core values. This process included surveys, focus groups,
    workshops, and department meetings. To align values with the climate in the
    workplace, the next challenge was to create an environment where all team
    members could live those values daily. The organization implemented formal and informal coaching for all members with trained credentialed external and internal coaches to help keep members aligned with strategic goals and organizational values.
